In collaboration with Finest Design Nest, the 2023 High Table Dinner was successfully held on 24th May, Wednesday. 40 student leaders gathered at the headquarters of Finest Design Nest to exchange ideas with environmental advocates from various fields under the theme of environmental protection and sustainable development.

Architect Ms Corrin Chan first shared with the students how the industry incorporates environmentally friendly materials into architectural design and introduced various environmental construction projects. Mr Calum Kenny, a research engineer at the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory, then talked about the development and prospects of wave and tidal energy nowadays. Followed by Mr Raymond Mak, co-founder and chief empowerment officer of Farmacy, and Ms Helen Chan, head of client experience of Urban Spring, shared how to further practice and promote environmental protection in daily life. Finally, the student leaders had an in-depth discussion session where they asked questions in small groups with each speaker.

Molly Muk from 4B, said, “It is an honor to attend this High Table Dinner. From vegetarian restaurant project, renewable energy to mobile farming, the four experts’ sharing has given me a broader understanding on the topic. In the group discussion, Corrin not only shared how her team created the first vegetarian restaurant in the University of Hong Kong in over a century, but also told us that vegetarian food can be diverse and greatly reduce carbon emissions. This has inspired me to hold a vegetarian experience day in my future leadership journey to promote this eco-friendly model.”

“I have learned that environmental protection is not only limited to waste management and energy conservation in daily life, but can also spread from engineering to business, such as environmentally friendly construction, wave energy generation, and urban farming, which has completely reshaped my inherent impression of environmental protection. At the event, I was even able to communicate with a real engineer in English. Although there were some difficulties at the beginning, we were able to fully understand what he said. Finally, Mr Calum also provided us some very helpful advice on future career planning, which has benefited me greatly,” recalled Bosco Tu from 3D.

Principal Mr Simon Lau expressed, “I am very pleased that we were able to hold the High Table Dinner in physical form again after three years. This is our fourth collaboration with Finest Design Nest, and this year’s event was in line with the theme of environmental protection. All participants brought their own tableware and shared food. I hope that students can make the most of these rare opportunities, applying the knowledge they learned from the industry pioneers and advocates and become the young people who are committed to making contributions to the society.”
