Write a letter to Ms Lee, your school Principal, to persuade her to change the policy on lockers.
Dear Ms Lee,
Currently, only a small number of students in our school have access to school lockers. As the chairperson of the Student Union, I have collected the view of students from different classes on this issue, and found some of the problems on this issue.
For student’s physical health, the problem of the current locker policy will cause students’ to develop bad posture. Students need to carry heavy school bags to school because they are without a locker, but the heavy and thick books are putting extra pressure on their muscles and ligaments. Therefore, their waist and spine may get hurt or they will have a tilted spine, so it leads to bad posture in students. In the end, students will have a humpback.
The problem of the current locker policy will bring a higher chance of causing conflict, which causes inconvenience to students. They are forced to put their school bags or textbooks on the floor or in their desk drawer, which is inconvenient for junior forms as they often need to carry their big bags around the campus. The school bags make the narrow aisles more congested, therefore students and teachers find it hard to walk in the aisles, so they easily fall down and then get hurt and there is a higher chance of causing conflicts as students might bump into each other.
Due to these problems, I think our school can change the policy on lockers. I think schools can increase the number of lockers, to let every student use the lockers. I will now discuss the importance of revising the current locker policy.
First of all, for students’ convenience, the importance of revising the current locker policy is to help the junior form students. They need to bring lots of books and things from home to school, because they have more single lessons, such as six subjects in eight lessons. Also, some of the students have joined some tutorial classes after school, therefore they need to bring these extra books to school and then back home. Some books, such as Putonghua books, are not as important as students do not need to do a quiz or revision, but they still need to bring it back home. If we carry out the new locker policy, it can greatly help the students, as they don’t need to bring books back and forth every day. They can just bring the important things home, for example their notes and the books for the subjects that will be quizzed.
Second, for students’ physical health, the importance of revising the current locker policy is ensuring the health and well-being of students. If students are without a locker, they need to carry big school bags to school because the books are very heavy and thick, therefore they will develop bad posture or become humpback. The new locker policy lets student not need to bring all the books to school, so their school bags become lighter. Therefore, the new policy prevents problems caused by heavy school bags.
Last but not least, for security reasons, the importance of revising the current locker policy is to reduce loss and theft cases. Some students said that their things were stolen from their desks, especially the calculator, because it is expensive. To solve this problem, lockers can allow students to put their belongings in their lockers, so they won’t be stolen. When students have a locker, they need to buy a lock to lock up their things to ensure it is safe. Give every student a locker to prevent the unfortunate and often stressful situations that occur when expensive items go missing.
Revising the current locker policy is very important to our students. As chairperson of the Student Union, I need to reflect the students’ opinions to you. Lockers can help students store their belongings and they can easily find it. I hope you can accept my new locker policy. Thank you very much.
Yours sincerely,
Chris Wong
